This evening I took some time to shoot some pictures of light streams in the Westbrook Rotary on Main Street. I also experienced my first angry passer by. She was concerned with my activity and wanted to know what I was doing and if I lived in Westbrook. Of course I told her I was taking pictures and that my city of residence was not of any legal consequence. She then persisted that I was acting very big brother-ish. I explained to her that I was taking pictures from a public sidewalk and that my actions were lawful.

Looking back at the conversation it is obvious that she really had no understanding of the concept of long term exposures. As you can see from the pictures below the only detail I get from passing vehicles is the streaks of light from automobiles. I find playing with photography in this way quite relaxing and rewarding. After the curious on looker departed I called my attorney and noted the encounter and my possible need for a follow-up a call with him if the good Samaritan called the police.

From time to time photographers do have interesting encounters with members of the public. My encounter this evening was the first ever of this kind and night photography has taken me to some interesting places. On that note one thing I personally recommend wearing is a reflective vest while enjoying night photography. A simple vest increases your visibility in situations where you might shoot near traffic and makes it hard for anyone to accuse you of being up to no good. People looking to cause problems don't usually wear clothing that will make them stand out.
Anyway I had a great time this evening standing in one spot taking pictures for a hour or so. I am not sure that I captured anything to add to my city lights series, but I had fun. Tomorrow morning I leave for Biddeford, Maine for a Helicopter ride. I don't really have the gear to take full advantage of such a flight, but I look forward to having some fun.
Great Westbrook!

Tony
